Situated in the malaria-free Addo area and a mere hour from the centre of Port Elizabeth lies the Addo Heights Equestrian Sports Development. This unique development forms an integral part of the bigger Stellenhof Leisure Project that borders the famous Addo Elephant National Park and will operate under the project banner of Addo Heights Equestrian Sports. The development comprises of an Equestrian Centre and Estate that will comprise of world class stables, a luxurious international indoor equine show facility, an extensive quarantine unit, a state of the art veterinary clinic and educational facilities.
World class stables: 300 Permanent stables (3+ x 3+) will be constructed in an alley like way linked to the event hall and the service building. Specific stable adjustments will be considered to accommodate specific breed requirements as well as space for training and preparation.
EQUINE SHOW FACILITY
This vast indoor show facility, 100m x 100m, forms an integral part of this world class Equestrian Centre. Ample parking, seating and housing for visitors and spectators ensures that the facility will be capable to host more than 1000 horses. This facility will manage the hosting of equestrian events on an international and national level as well as the continued training and education associated with such events.
State of the art veterinary clinic: A sophisticated veterinary clinic will be strategically and geographically positioned to accommodate the need for exceptional veterinary surgery and care within the Eastern Cape. Further research and clinical studies will be coordinated between government, international veterinary universities and the NMMU. Currently planning and coordination is underway between the Pretoria Veterinary University and Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
Extensive quarantine unit: Extensive quarantine facilities to support the import and export of animals on behalf of SA breeding and tournament regulations form a key part in the Addo Heights Infrastructure.
EDUCATION FACILITIES
Park Warden/Ranger: At present wardens are trained at different locations under different conditions and it is becoming clear that standardisation is vital to achieve a higher, more definitive degree of education. The adjacent Addo Elephant National Park (AENP) will form the basis for all practical training and staging of students. Together with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the AENP this training facility will be a success.
In terms of general education, general college facilities will be present for all other requirements within the Sundays River Municipality.
EQUESTRIAN HIGH SCHOOL
This niche tertiary educational facility will improve the knowledge of trainers, breeders, farriers, vets and riders in all the different disciplines. The four basic disciplines that are applied are Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Saddle Seat & Western. Students may graduate in areas such as horse behaviour, nutrition, physiology, veterinarian science or education. Students interested in bachelor & associate degrees are prepared in careers in Horse & Farm Management, Thoroughbred management, Instructors, Equine Agribusiness, Parasitology and breeding.
The majestic Equestrian Estate comprises of 150, 2 hectares equestrian style plots with equestrian “farmhouse” style residences with each residence having their own stables.
The climate in the Addo area is semi maritime and this is conducive to an all year round event cycle. Tourists, residents, learners and executives can bask in the splendour of the nature bordering the estate 365 days a year.
The nearby Stellenhof Leisure Estate incorporating a five star hotel, five star holiday units, 750 lavish residential units, wellness clinic and 18 hole championship golf course, adds to the already long list of world class facilities.As a result of the Coega Development Project encompassing the Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), the Eastern Cape is enjoying unprecedented economic growth.
