Mokolo Wilderness Estate is named after the Mokolo River which borders the Estate on the East for 1,6 km. The Estate is situated within the UNESCO Proclaimed World Heritage Site, namely the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. The Waterberg region has been described as one of South Africa’s best-kept secrets. Being a malaria free area and less than 300 km from Johannesburg, one can understand why it has suddenly become one of South Africa’s hottest bush destinations.
BIOSPEHERE
The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO proclaimed World Heritage Site. It received international recognition in 2001. The Waterberg Biosphere forms an ideal eco destination as defined by the IUCN (World Conservation Union).
The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve covers approximately 14,500 square kilometers roughly the size of the Okovango Delta in Botswana. The Waterberg is an extremely under populated area in terms of human numbers, but has a long history of human occupation and has been inhabited by a succession of people over hundred of thousands of years.
Over the last twenty years land use has changed from cattle and crop farming to a bourgeoning conservation community that is involved in sustainable utilization of wildlife. The topography of the Estate is unique even by Waterberg standards. The Estate is endowed with beautiful savannah plains, deep gorges, lovely riverside bush and unique views from everywhere on the Estate.
THE ESTATE
